The Best Cover of “Stairway To Heaven” I Have Ever Heard
Who remembers that scene in Wayne’s World when Wayne walks into the guitar shop to shred on that classic white ’64 Fender Stratocaster work of art called “Excalibur”?
And the guitar shop attendant there (nerd note – who’s really NOT Dana Strum the bassist of the band Slaughter) points out a sign saying he cannot play “Stairway to Heaven”?
Yeah.
No “Stairway”.
Denied!!
How time flies by!
At the grand old age of 42, Led Zeppelin’s iconic “Stairway to Heaven” is still one of the biggest rock tunes of ALL time ever to grace our eardrums.
Hey, it’s one of the staples on our BodyForge rock soundtracks.
Hard to believe it was never even released as a single.
As one of the most covered rock songs in history, we have seen some beautiful renditions of it, as well as some horrifyingly ghastly ones.
Well, today I want to share just about the best cover I have ever heard with all of you.
This is the version Heart presented us on December 2nd, 2012, when the three surviving members of the original Led Zeppelin line up were being toasted during the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony.
(Nerd note – the guy playing the drums in this cover is Jason Bonham, who is John Bonham’s son. John was the original Led Zeppelin drummer who passed away on September 25, 1980, at 32 years of age, bringing an effective end to Zeppelin.)
With Ann’s soulful vocals, and Nancy’s masterful guitar work, no “Stairway” cover has ever sounded this good.
Even President Barack Obama approved.
And David Letterman and Dustin Hoffman were just as delighted to be there honouring the band.
And when the choir exploded into the chorus and Ann Wilson crooned that famous plaintive line “And as we wind on down the road…” it even made Robert Plant himself shed quiet tears of appreciation.
And, as I said, I would love to share the video of that amazing moment with all of you guys and gals out there.
